Seeking Perspective - Steps to take for career switch from successful software Sales Engineer to Portfolio Management career track?
Hi, everyone. I've read many posts related to this question recently and decided to start my own thread to see if anyone can give a bit of personalized perspective for my situation.
I'm considering a switch into finance with the long-term goal of achieving a Portfolio Manager position (at a quant or quantamental fund), and I would like to know what steps to take or if this is even possible
(e.g. MBA/MS Finance/MS Financial Engineering, ==> Analyst position, ???)
Too long - won't read B.S. Chemical Engineering 2013 Currently a Senior Sales Engineer for a software company Investing is a personal pursuit right now but would like to make this a career Personal background B.S. Chemical Engineering, Texas A&M University, graduated 2013. Honors society officer (top 25% of class GPA). Avid investor. Traded my first option at 16 and more active now than ever. Currently, I manage my own money in a long/short equities portfolio expressed through both stock and options, but have experience with futures and forex as well. Currently earning about $160k, but would be willing to take a sizeable haircut on pay just to get into this field. I'm basically obsessed with researching the markets and optimizing my investing strategies. Strong emphasis and data and process, which would fit nicely with a Quant fund of some type. Investing is basically the only thing in my life that distracts me from my current job. Strong Excel skills, basic Python skills (could easily build this up). Strong understanding of options pricing models and probabilistic approaches to trading. Job history Senior Technology Consulting Analyst for global implementation firm Senior Sales Engineer for an extremely successful software company. Early promotion, rated top 10%, etc. I joined in the "late startup" phase several years ago. This has built deep industry expertise in seeing what a successful tech company look like inside-out, as well as broad industry expertise from my customer engagements across most other industries. Obviously, I also have strong sales and technical acumen because I'm the technical resource in the sales cycle. The product I sell exposes me to advanced analytical methods, including some machine learning applications. I enjoy selling and would be happy with the sales aspects of raising capital as part of the job. Where I need to learn In short, lots. I'm so far removed that I don't know what I don't know. Hoping you all can help out =) Currently studying financial statements analysis, financial modeling, and python data science in my spare time. I'm an avid learner and I'm pretty confident I can learn anything I put my mind to in this field (excluding the PhD-level quant materials, though that's not the position I'm after). Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to answer.
After listening to countless episodes of podcast interviews like "Invest Like the Best" and others, and hearing all the traits of successful Portfolio Managers and Investing Firms, I'm starting to get that lingering feeling that this is where I would be most engaged and successful in my career. Investing is the only subject in my life that I can read about and experiment with for 12 hours in a day and still crave more when I wake up again. Whether it's opinion pieces or published studies, I just find it endlessly fascinating.

[comments] Pro Basketball Player/$20-25K/Rookie Year/ Money Management
I am 22 and I will be 23 in September. My rookie year will start in September for a Semi-Pro Brazilian basketball team. I will make approximately $20-25k. The contract details will be ironed out later today by my agent. Rent will be covered, food might be covered, and health insurance is also covered. I have approximately $3.5.k in college loan debt at interest rates between 3-6%. Aside from those expenses I have some family in the US that might need some support for rent and car payments.
At the moment I intend to play for several years then perhaps go back to school for a master's degree. I have a BA in Biophysical Geography and minor in Environmental Studies and Planning. I have many interests and I would like to get into the social business of doing good. I have some interest in forex trade but still need to do more research, also at one point, I'd like to invest into the stock market and real estate.
I am familiar with this
of a player with a similar situation to me. Aside from his thread, what kind of material in this sub would be the most helpful for me and what kind of investment advice should I heed?

Well I used BPP for my IMC training last year. As far as i know, BPP are the best in terms of the preparation they provide. Consistency comes with a guaranteed win rate for the long term. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Winning is ...
